USDOT Number Requirements: Who Needs One & How to Get It
Quick question: do you actually need a USDOT number? If you're reading this, the answer is almost certainly yes. But let's make sure.
Who Needs a USDOT Number?
You need one if your vehicles meet any of these criteria:
- Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 10,001 lbs or more
- Designed to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
- Designed to transport 16 or more passengers regardless of compensation
- Transports hazardous materials in quantities requiring placarding
And here's the kicker — this applies to both interstate and intrastate operations. Even if you never cross a state line, you likely need a USDOT number under your state's regulations.
How to Apply
The application is free and done online through the FMCSA Unified Registration System at fmcsa.dot.gov. The process takes about 20-30 minutes. You'll need:
- Your legal business name and EIN (or SSN for sole proprietors)
- Business address and mailing address
- Type of operation (for-hire, private, exempt)
- Number of vehicles and drivers
- Types of cargo you'll haul
Once filed, your USDOT number is typically assigned within minutes. But having a number doesn't mean you can start hauling — if you need an MC number (for-hire authority), that takes an additional 20-25 business days.
Keeping Your Number Active
Your USDOT number must be updated every 2 years through the MCS-150 biennial update. Your update month is determined by the last two digits of your USDOT number. Miss the update and your number goes inactive — which means any roadside inspection becomes a very bad day.
Operating Without One
Don't. The fine for operating a CMV without a USDOT number is up to $7,405 per day. We've seen carriers get caught at scale houses assuming they were "too small" to need one. That's an expensive assumption.
