MCS-150 Biennial Update: Don't Let Your USDOT Number Go Inactive

Here's a fun fact: thousands of carriers every year have their USDOT number deactivated because they forgot a 10-minute online form. The MCS-150 biennial update isn't glamorous, but skipping it can ground your entire operation.

What Is the MCS-150?

The MCS-150 is the form you originally filed to get your USDOT number. FMCSA requires you to update it every 24 months to keep your company information current — things like number of power units, drivers, annual mileage, and contact info.

When Is It Due?

Your filing month depends on the last two digits of your USDOT number:

  • Numbers ending in 1: January
  • Numbers ending in 2: February
  • ...and so on through December (0 = October, 11 = November, 12 = December)

Even-numbered years or odd? That depends on whether the last two digits of your USDOT are odd or even. Confusing? Yeah. Just check SAFER — it'll tell you your next update date.

How to File

File online at FMCSA's portal or mail in the paper form. Online is faster — usually confirmed within 24-48 hours. You'll need your USDOT PIN (if you've lost it, request a new one online).

Update your vehicle count, driver count, annual mileage, and any changes to your operation type or cargo. Even if nothing changed, you still need to file.

What Happens If You Don't File?

FMCSA deactivates your USDOT number. A deactivated number means you can be placed out of service at a roadside inspection. Reactivation requires filing the update plus a possible delay before your number shows active again.

Just set a calendar reminder and file it. Ten minutes, no cost, zero excuse to miss it.
